Each winter, influenza causes tens of thousands of hospital admissions and several thousand deaths across the UK. Despite being widely viewed as a ‘bad cold’, flu is a serious illness that can be especially dangerous for the very young, the elderly, pregnant women and anyone with a long-term health condition. The annual flu vaccine remains the single most effective way to protect yourself, your family and the people around you.

Why a New Vaccine Every Year? Flu viruses mutate constantly. Each spring, the World Health Organisation analyses circulating strains and recommends the composition for the following winter’s vaccine. The protection from last year’s jab fades over time and may not match this year’s dominant strains — which is why an annual top-up matters even if you were vaccinated previously.

Who Qualifies for a Free NHS Flu Jab? The NHS offers free flu vaccinations to people most at risk of serious complications. This typically includes:

  • Everyone aged **65 and over**
  • **Pregnant women** at any stage of pregnancy
  • Adults and children with certain **long-term health conditions**, including asthma, diabetes, heart disease, kidney or liver disease, and neurological conditions
  • People with a **weakened immune system**
  • Those living in long-stay residential care
  • **Carers** (paid or unpaid) for an elderly or disabled person
  • **Frontline health and social care workers**
  • All children aged 2 to 17 (usually via a nasal spray at school)

If you’re unsure whether you qualify, our pharmacy team can check eligibility for you on the spot.

Private Flu Jabs at Riviera Health Pharmacy: For everyone who doesn’t qualify on the NHS, we offer **private flu vaccinations** at a competitive price. The appointment takes around ten minutes from start to finish; no GP referral is needed, and walk-ins are welcome alongside booked slots. Many local employers also arrange vouchers or on-site clinics for their teams — we’d be delighted to discuss workplace vaccination programmes.

When to Get Vaccinated: The ideal window is **September to early November**, before flu activity typically peaks between December and March. The vaccine takes around two weeks to provide full protection, so earlier is better — but it’s never too late in the season to benefit, and we continue vaccinating right through to February.

What to Expect on the Day: There’s very little to it. You’ll have a short chat with the pharmacist to check your medical history and confirm consent. The jab itself is a quick injection into the upper arm, and most people feel only a brief scratch. You can drive, work and exercise as normal straight afterwards.

Common, mild side effects include:

  • A sore or tender arm for a day or two
  • A slightly raised temperature
  • Mild muscle aches

Serious reactions are extremely rare. The vaccine cannot give you flu — it does not contain any live virus.

Beyond the Jab: Staying Well This Winter. Vaccination is the cornerstone of winter health, but a few extra habits go a long way:

  • **Wash your hands** frequently with soap and warm water.
  • **Catch coughs and sneezes** in a tissue and bin it straight away.
  • **Stay home** if you feel unwell, to protect colleagues and family.
  • **Top up Vitamin D** between October and March, when UK sunlight is too weak to produce enough naturally.
  • **Get plenty of sleep** — the immune system depends on it.

Book your flu jab online or walk in — our doors are open, and we’re here to help keep you and your family well this winter.
