Frequently Asked Questions

How does period delay work?
We prescribe Norethisterone — a tablet that maintains a hormone called progesterone in your body. While you keep taking it, the womb lining stays in place and your period is postponed. Your period usually returns 2–3 days after you stop the tablets.

Start 3 days before your period is due. Take one tablet three times a day for as long as you need — typically up to a maximum of 17 days. We’ll give you a clear schedule.

Most women safely delay their period by up to 17 days. Going beyond this is not recommended as the lining of the womb may begin to shed regardless.

Most women tolerate Norethisterone well. Possible side effects include bloating, mild nausea, breast tenderness and mood changes. Serious side effects are rare — we’ll review your history to make sure it’s safe for you.

Period delay isn’t suitable if you have a history of blood clots, certain cardiovascular conditions, severe liver disease, or are pregnant or possibly pregnant. We’ll go through this with you at the consultation.

No — Norethisterone for period delay is NOT a contraceptive. You should continue using your usual contraception as normal.
